I just bought a cheap, simple, little Kambrook 5 cup rice cooker and am very happy with it!

I have an old rice cooker but it's big and heavy and scratched up inside, and I could never be bothered with it. I've realised that I need appliances to be light, suitable for making small portions, and easy to clean, or I just won't use them.

I haven't actually used the cooker to make plain rice yet but I've made a couple of risotto-y things and steamed some vegetables and that all worked great, much better than trying to wrangle things with saucepans. Even when I forgot a risotto for 20 minutes and it started to smell a bit like burning it still tasted pretty good. Unfortunately the minimum amount of rice it cooks is about 2 serves, but the bowl + lid is small enough to fit comfortably in the fridge and then I can chuck that into the cooker again the next day to reheat leftovers.

I tried steaming a cake and it was slightly better tasting than cake cooked in the microwave but more trouble, and not as nice as cake cooked in the oven, so idk if I'll bother again. I also tried rice pudding which the internet warned me might end badly in a rice cooker without a porridge setting, and it did! But that's ok. The ones with fancy settings are more expensive and fiddly, and this is fine for most purposes.

It's very light and easy to clean by hand, I'm not sure it's dishwasher safe but we don't have a dishwasher.

Anyway, I'm sure most small simple rice cookers would be just as good, and some might not have plastic steamer sections, which is my main issue with this one so far.
